According to hymnary.com, Folliott Sandford Pierpoint wrote these lyrics in the spring of 1863 while taking in the countryside sights and sounds of the Avon River.
May these lyrics inspire your own “hymn of grateful praise” today as you encounter the beauty of God’s creation during your morning commute to work, on a lunchtime walk, or with your family after dinner in your own back yard. 💛

For the beauty of the earth,
for the glory of the skies,
for the love which from our birth
over and around us lies.
Lord of all, to Thee we raise
this our hymn of grateful praise.
For the wonder of each hour,
of the day and of the night,
hill and vale, and tree and flower,
sun and moon, and stars of light.
Lord of all, to Thee we raise this our hymn of grateful praise.

Folliott Sandford Pierpoint (1835–1917) was educated at Queens’ College in Cambridge and taught the classics at Somersetshire College. A teacher and writer, Pierpoint published multiple collections of poems, including The Chalice of Nature, and other Poems (published in 1855).
John Rutter has a beautiful arrangement of this terrific hymn. https://youtu.be/PTOfSKXkRa0?si=Zd9CyFvUmoHDgf4N
